How to Donate

BFL does not own or operate any of the programs it supports. The Nutrition Grants Program provides funds directly to schools or communities to start or improve the quality of a child nutrition program. Grants can be used to pay for food, equipment, and other operating costs.

If you, your business, or organization would like to make a financial donation to Alberta’s child nutrition programs, please contact the Alberta Coordinator at ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ).

Re: Personal Donations - Your donations go further in Alberta!

As an added incentive to making an individual donation, Alberta Culture is matching personal donations through their Community Spirit Grant program.  In 2009, Breakfast for Learning Alberta received additional support of $11,400 as a result of this grant program.

Re: Food Donations

Unfortunately, food donations to Breakfast for Learning cannot be accepted.  Breakfast for Learning Alberta does not have a central depot to store food donations and neither do participating schools.

While schools may appreciate donations of food for their nutrition programs, they need to be first contacted directly and asked:

  • can they accept a donation of food?
  • what food is appropriate?
  • what food is needed?

As an alternative to making a donation of food to a school, please consider purchasing a gift certificate to a local food store instead.

BFL does not solicit funds through telemarketing campaigns.

Don’t let your donation be compromised

BFL depends on community support to help programs across Canada, but encourages donors to be vigilant about telemarketing campaigns. Be telemarketing-savvy!

Perform your due diligence with telemarketing campaigns!

Student nutrition programs across the country depend on the support and generosity of BFL donors but unfortunately, fraudulent charities or telemarketing campaigns can attempt to take advantage of people’s desire to make a difference.

We do encourage donors to be savvy with telemarketers. If you are solicited by any charitable telemarketing campaign, BFL urges you to:

  • Be suspicious of hard sales pitches or pressure for immediate financial commitments.
  • Never give out your credit card, bank account or Social Insurance Number to unknown callers.
  • Collect as much information as possible including the name of the caller, the organization, and contact information, including a call-back number.
  • Ask for the charitable organization number and visit the Revenue Canada website to verify.
  • Call the charity and ensure they have authorized the telemarketing appeal and ask what percentage of your donation they will receive from the telemarketing agency.

For persistent, suspicious calls, file a formal complaint with your local police or call Phone Busters at 1.888.495.8501.
