Breakfast for Learning Alberta There are many useful websites for nutrition and healthy eating, but sometimes they may be difficult to find. The following resources and websites are recommended for reliable information on healthy eating and nutrition, and school nutrition programs. Action Schools BC This website is a great resource for school nutrition, health and activity information.There are also some great posters on colourful food choices and vegetable and fruit serving sizes www.actionschoolsbc.ca Alberta Coalition of Healthy School Communities This website is a primary tool for increasing knowledge exchange about school health promotion and enhancing network development. Teaching just got easier for K-3 Teachers! Did you know that you can meet the learning outcomes for math, science and English languages arts while teaching health? Power to Play, the new healthy eating and active living program for K-3 teachers, does just that. This cutting edge, Alberta based program is grade specific, is based on the current child development theories and follows the inquiry-based model of learning adopted by Alberta Education. Almost 2000 teachers in Alberta have the program (see Power to Play to read their comments). The program and all materials including a teacher manual, 12 study prints, 103 food picture cards, classroom poster and CD/DVD, are free to teachers who attend this session. CHN's goal is to help Canadians find the information they're looking for on how to stay healthy and prevent disease. Here you'll find information to help you inspire heart-healthy habits in children. Kids Eat Smart, Newfoundland The Kids Eat Smart Foundation helps establish and support school nutrition programs, and this site has program and recipe ideas. www.kidseatsmart.ca Mission Nutrition Dietitians of Canada and dietitians with Kellogg Canada Inc. have developed an educational program designed to promote the healthy growth and development of school children. http://www.missionnutrition.ca Nutrition Resources for Teachers, K-9 The David Thompson Health Region (Alberta) developed nutrition resource kits for Grades K to 9. Nutrition Startup Kit Nutrition Startup Kit is a pdf file and can be downloaded to your computer. How ever the file size is large and may require some time to download depending on your internet speed. Download the Nutrition Startup Kit (PDF) Alberta Nutrition Guidelines The Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth have been developed to assist organizations in providing young people with healthy food choices from the time they enter daycare right through to when they finish high school. These Guidelines were sent to all schools in Fall 2008. The Guidelines provide advice on how to make nutritious foods more accessible, and how to limit the availability of foods which are less nutritious in the school environment. The Guidelines have divided foods into three categories: • Choose most often• Choose sometimes • Choose least often. The Guidelines are in a binder format which will allow for the addition of new information as it becomes available. The Breakfast for Learning Albert advisory Council supports the use of the Alberta Nutrition Guidelines for Children and Youth in Breakfast for Learning supported school nutrition programs.
