| Canada Remains One of the Few Developed Nations Without a National Nutrition Program for Children |
|
In 2007/08, Breakfast for Learning funded 3,108 nutrition programs, serving over 56 million breakfasts, lunches and snacks to more than 360,000 students. But the need far surpasses the resources available. Last year, we were only able to grant 27% of the funds requested for breakfast, lunch and snack programs. At Breakfast for Learning we know it is only possible for our vision to become a reality when Canada has what other countries have had for decades – a national child nutrition program. Canada is one of the few developed countries without a national child nutrition program, despite the mounting need for one. This is at a time when parents and health professionals are struggling to reduce childhood obesity and to increase children’s consumption of nutritious food. Children's nutrition programs are already available in many parts of the country. Assistance is provided to some children, but not all, and the continuation of these efforts is subject to fundraising and volunteer time. Improving our children’s diets is important to their healthy development and it will also benefit the social and economic health of Canada.
