BFL AWARD FOR INSPIRATION AND
LEADERSHIP

Photo of Jean MackayBreakfast for Learning is proud to honour Jean MacKay of Saskatchewan as the 2008 recipient of the national BFL Award for Inspiration and Leadership. The annual award recognizes a person or program that is making an outstanding impact in the area of child nutrition by helping to ensure all children are well-nourished and ready to learn.

Jean MacKay is a long-time volunteer with Breakfast for Learning and the Saskatchewan Nutrition Advisory Council for Kids. Jean's humble leadership serves as an inspiration to all those who work with her, or have been impacted by her work. Whether it be garnering government support for child nutrition, raising funds for local nutrition programs or rolling up her sleeves to serve nutritious meals to students - Jean is busy working wherever there is a need.

Jean's determined, optimistic attitude helps ensure children are receiving healthy food to give them the energy they need to stay alert and engaged in class This positive attitude garners many accomplishments including (just to name a few!):

  • She is a founding member of the Saskatchewan Nutrition Advisory Council for Kids.
  • Has helped to secure well over half a million dollars in corporate funding and individual support for student nutrition programs.
  • Invited friends and neighbours into her home for a Come and Go Holiday Tea to advocate for Breakfast for Learning and provide information on how they can help.
  • Has arranged meetings and communications between federal and provincial politicians and influential government officials to garner support for child nutrition programs. Recently, Jean's efforts helped profile Breakfast for Learning in the official Hansard recorded during a senate debate.
  • She is a nutrition program volunteer, donor and motivator.

Breakfast for Learning is proud to have a child nutrition champion like Jean MacKay! A round of applause to all our amazing volunteers across the country and congratulations to our BFL Award nominees and finalists, Susan Latsch from Lakeport Secondary School/St. Catharines Collegiate and Lori Nikkel from the Toronto Partners for Student Nutrition.
