Girl with AppleA Letter from the Boys & Girls Club of East Dartmouth Breakfast Program

I have been coordinating the programs for the Boys and Girls Club of East Dartmouth for 4 years now.  I am mainly involved with the program at Ian Forsyth Elementary School where I am each morning.  I supply administrative and logistic support for the programs at Admiral Westphal Elementary and Caledonia Jr High.  The schools are all located in East Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.  The two elementary schools feed into the Junior High.

The principal at Admiral Westphal School runs their breakfast most days with a group of community volunteers.  He says, “It is a benefit to me to do breakfast.  When the students eat in the morning there are less behavioural problems and that makes my life easier.”

The teachers have also said that the students are less disruptive in class when they have eaten and the whole class benefits.  One of the teachers said when this program first started “the improvement in the math skills of one of her students once he started having breakfast was amazing.”
