Fanning Education Centre-Program Profile

Fanning Education Centre is a P-6 school nestled in the community of Hazel Hill just outside of Canso Town in the Strait Regional School Board.  It is home to a remarkable breakfast program spearheaded by Coordinator, Catherine DeRabbie, and enthusiastically supported by staff and administration of the school.  Fanning serves more than 80 breakfasts each day from a buffet selection of juice, cereal, milk, toast and fruit.

One of the “Keys to Success” for this breakfast program is the diverse and dedicated group of volunteers who carry out the day to day operation of the program.  From the local chapter of the Lions Club and the Canso detachment of the RCMP, local church groups, and parents, this program has it all.  The volunteers here are so evolved that they manage their own schedule, with an overlap of at least 4 each day, and sometimes upwards of 20!

Fanning Education Centre has an incredible school spirit which is readily reflected on the faces of students and staff throughout. A weekly assembly highlights student’s effort and achievement and serves to capture the positive environment within the school.  It’s obvious that Fanning is a student centered, community minded and community supported school. Breakfast is a way to bring everyone together to start the day off right!
