BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING NOVA SCOTIA

In 2010/2011, Breakfast for Learning Nova Scotia helped support 258 nutrition programs serving 20,239 students.

Dr. Arthur Hines Elementary
This P-6 school located on the rural Hants Shore region of Nova Scotia runs a breakfast program 5 days per week serving approximately 50 students daily.

The breakfast coordinator has a presence in the school and encourages student participation and volunteers.

“Our school community is proud of supporting the Breakfast Program for over 15 years.  Students, staff and parents understand the importance of a nutritious breakfast and appreciate that the program is consistently available.”

“Morning, in most homes, is a hectic time with everyone getting ready for work and school, followed by a long bus ride. The breakfast program provides students not only with a nutritious meal but also with time to unwind and relax before classes start, and to socialize with friends not in their class.  It gives them a good start to the day.”

Kingston and District Elementary
This P-6 school has 475 students, 110 of whom partake in breakfast which is served 5 days per week.

The Breakfast program is named “Morning Munch with Marvin” (Marvin is the mascot of the school) and operates out of the school cafeteria and run by volunteers.

“A very positive experience to be a part of the program for all members of our school.”

Port Williams Elementary School
This P-5 school located just outside Wolfville NA has 248 Students and run a breakfast program 5 days per week.

Each morning a cheerful announcement is made inviting anyone who wishes to join Mrs. Williams (lunch lady) for breakfast in the lunch room. Occasionally staff and parents join in along with approximately 30 students

The program “brings the school community closer together and helps to promote a more caring school environment.  It also brings multigenerational volunteers into the school community.”

We have a “cereal tree” fundraiser in December for donations of cereal boxes.  In late November supplies were running low and one child excitedly told the lunchroom coordinator that he couldn’t wait until Christmas because then there  would be enough boxes of cereal that he could then have 2 bowls of cereal for his breakfast!

Dr. W.A. MacLeod Elementary School
P-6 school located in Stellarton with 211 students.

The Breakfast Program operates in the multipurpose room and serves 50 children per day, every day of the week.

The program is spearheaded by coordinator Alice Cameron, a senior citizen that resides near by.

“ To some it’s a convenience that breakfast is available at school and to others, well they like the choices at school better than at home!”

“The breakfast program is an opportunity to try new foods”
