BREAKFAST FOR LEARNING SASKATCHEWAN

In 2010/11, Breakfast for Learning Saskatchewan will help to start and sustain 169 child nutrition programs, serving healthy meals and snacks to over 22,000 students.

Wascana Community School

President and CEO of Breakfast for Learning, Wendy Wong, and Director of Field Operations and Chapter Development, Sheila Debly, visited Saskatchewan and volunteered at the Wascana Community School Breakfast program. They helped to prepare the morning breakfast and nut free granola for the next day. They, along with provincial coordinator, Kelly Berlinic, assisted student leaders in the distribution of the breakfast to each classroom where the meal is consumed in a “family style” setting with the teachers taking time to engage in values teaching and informal interaction with the children. The youngsters were happy to announce that their favorite food is yoghurt and many of the fruits served were also listed as crowd pleasers.

Community School Coordinator, Marla Dufour, and Nutrition Program Coordinator, Brenda Shukin, explained how Wascana School is utilizing their nutrition program to help facilitate the teaching of Cree language to the children. They also offer basic life skills training as part of student participation in the food prep. Wascana School Nutrition Program is an exemplary partnership between the SK Provincial Government, Breakfast for Learning (Gray Hadden Family Foundation) and local partners and volunteers.

Westmount Community School was recently the recipient of a President’s Choice Children’s Charity work bee. These dedicated employees volunteered at the school nutrition program. They worked alongside the Breakfast for Learning coordinator to help the school nutrition worker prepare foods for the students. Healthy muffins, granola, turkey chili and tomato salsa were just some of the foods the volunteers contributed to make. The students at Westmount enjoy daily breakfast and lunch as well as a universal snack thanks to the many partners and dedicated workers and volunteers who make these programs happen.
